- Remember that Favoritism is “the unfair favoring of one person or group at the expense of another.”
- - It happens when you give special treatment to someone based on irrelevant things (like their race, wealth, looks, etc…)
- Favoritism is unlike God’s character:
- - “God does not show favoritism” (Romans 2:11, Acts 10:34)
- - “There is no favoritism with him” (Ephesians 6:9)
- This is why it is wrong for us to show favoritism!
- - “But if you show favoritism, you sin…” (James 2:9)
- Now, answer these questions
- - 1) Explain when it is *not* favoritism to give a special blessing to someone.
- - 2) Explain when it *IS* favoritism to give a special blessing to someone.
- - 3) Explain why it was not favoritism for God to choose to give the special blessing to Abraham, Isaac, & Jacob.
- - 4) What are some other Bible stories that show God does NOT show favoritism?

Genesis 25-28: Jacob’s & Esau’s Conflicts: Study Packet, Page 2
Jacob’s Dream:
- - God appears to Jacob in a dream as he flees toward Haran
- - - Notice how God so often takes the initiative to start relationships with us!
- - - He seeks us more than we seek Him!
- - Jacob sees a ladder w/angels going up/down
- - - This stretching from earth to heaven
- - - God told Jacob that he will receive Abraham’s  blessing—
- - - - “I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you”
- - When Jacob wakes up…
- - - He names the place Bethel (“House of God”)
- - - He sets up a rock to remember it (Memorial or ‘Cairn’ Stones)
- - - He promises to follow God, if God takes care of him.
- - - - “If God will be with me and will watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear so that I return safely to my father’s household, then the Lord will be my God. . . and of all that you give me I will give you a tenth.”
- - - - You can tell that Jacob has not yet learned to trust God!
- - So far, how have you seen God as sovereign in Jacob’s life?
- - - Many different possible answers. Just keep thinking about this.
