- - - 1a. If God is our shepherd, what does that make us?
- - - - His sheep!
- - - 5. Why don’t we have to be afraid of the bad things in this world? What removes fear from our lives?
- - - - If we realize God is our Shepherd we can lose fear because as our Shepherd, he loves, guides, & cares for us.
- - - - Notice what this verse points out:
- - - - - He cares for our needs [food, shelter, safety] & gives us rest
- - - - - - We lie down in green pastures
- - - - - - He leads us besides quiet waters
- - - - - He restores our souls (giving us new energy and vigor, spiritually [& mentally/physically])
- - - - - He guides us in in righteous paths (Showing us the right way to go & right things to do)
- - - - - He is with us through 'the valley of the shadow of death' (not abandoning us in the hardest and most dangerous of times)
- - - - - His rod & staff comfort us (by guiding us the right way [e.g. a gentle push in the right direction from the staff/rod] and warding/scaring off dangers [e.g. a wolf being stuck with the rod]
- - - - - Even before our enemies He prepares a table to care for us
- - - - - He anoints us (gives us significance & showing how He values us)
- - - - - His goodness & love will follow us
- - - - - We have a secure future with Him!
- - - 7. What do you think is meant by dwelling in “the house of the LORD”?
- - - - This points out an afterlife, our time in heaven! A key reward for those who hope in Christ.

Memory Quiz Preparation:
- Your Verses: Psalm 23:1-4, 6 (ESV)
- - Want: A word referring to 'lack,,' or 'need,' to be lacking
- - Mercy: From the Hebrew word cHesed, refers to a loyal love, shown in kindness & goodness; also called 'lovingkindness' in some places
 - Your Questions: Based upon our class discussion & your personal reflection, use complete sentences to specifically give four practical Jr. High examples on how God could be our Good Shepherd.  Use four different ideas in these verses & put them in your own words.
- - There are all sorts of answers you can give for this!
- - - We looked at the pictures & words on your Study Packet, page 11 to guide our conversation for this.
- - Think specifically about how God can help us deal with fear (the psalm mentions many things we could be afraid of: Valley of the shadow of death, evil, enemies).

- - There are many other things to look at, consider these thoughts:
- - - Why aren't we 'in want' (which means lacking something we need)?
- - - How does He make us lie down?
- - - How does He lead us?
- - - What are the green pastures & still waters?
- - - How does He restore our soul?
- - - How does goodness & mercy follow us?
- - How you answer these types of questions from this psalm will show your good reflection & give you what you need to answer this question.

- - The Hebrew title means: Praises
- - The Greek/English title means: Songs
- - Ultimately, they are… Praise Songs to God!
- Authors: There are many! 
- - David, known as “the sweet psalmist of Israel,” wrote ~75 of the 150 psalms 
- - Other contributors include: Asaph (12), the sons of Korah (10), Solomon (two), Moses (one), Heman (one), & Ethan (one), with ~48 other anonymous psalmists! 
- Basic Qualities: 
- - This was the hymnal/song book of the ancient Hebrews
- - It is very much like a collection of personal prayers/devotions.
- - Many of the Psalms contain technical musical terms lost by the time the OT was translated into Greek (examples: Alamoth, Gittith, Higgaion, Mahalath, Miktam, Selah, & Shiggaion)
- - Psalms were written at different times, for different reasons
- - - Response to event
- - - Reflecting on God
- - - Prayer to God
- - The Book of Psalms is divided into five 'books' for reasons that are not precisely known today…
