Instructional Time: Unit 3: Psalms and Genesis 27-50
Journal: In 5 or more sentences, explain the role God played in what happened to Joseph, according to these verses:
- Genesis 39:2, 21, 23

Jacob Reunites w/His Brothers: The famine is also in Canaan, so…
- Israel/Jacob sent his sons to Egypt for food
- - Benjamin, his new favorite, stayed home
- - When the 10 brothers arrive they unknowingly…
- - - Meet Joseph & bow to him…
- - - - Remember that dream? … :-)
- - Joseph tests them to see if they can now be trusted!
- They pass his tests! (Especially Judah)
- - They were willing to suffer & die to save their family
- - - Even their father’s new favorite child, Benjamin
- Joseph joyously reveals who he is to them!
- - He expresses his complete forgiveness toward them
- - He invites them to Egypt for safety & provision—
- - - To survive the final 5 years of famine
- - - Jacob’s whole family comes to Egypt!
- As Jacob moves his family to Egypt…
- - God encourages Jacob & promises: “Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for there I will make you into a great nation. I myself will go down with you to Egypt, and I will also bring you up again.”
- - Here Joseph provides for them all in the land of Goshen.
- Jacob lives in Egypt for 17 years in Egypt

Jacob/Israel Blessings:
- Jacob adopts Joseph’s 2 children
- - He gives them each an inheritance
- - He prophetically recognizes that the youngest (Ephraim) as receiving the greater blessing.
- - Joseph is told, “God will be with you, and bring you back to the land of your fathers.”
- Jacob prophesies that…
- - God will be with his family & return them to Canaan
- When He blesses his kids…
- - Reuben, Simeon, & Levi are looked over for special blessings… Why?
- - Judah (4th born) receives the great blessing of leadership
- - The other sons all receive other various blessings & prophetic words concerning what the future holds.
- Jacob dies at 147 years old & is buried back in Canaan

Joseph’s Brothers’ Fear:
- When Jacob dies,
- - Joseph’s brothers fear that Joseph will now kill them
- - They think he has held a grudge all this time & is going to pay them back!
- They humble themselves before Joseph & beg him to forgive them
- - Joseph weeps and says, “Do not be afraid, for am I in God’s place? As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to bring about this present result, to preserve many people alive. So therefore, do not be afraid; I will provide for you and your little ones. (50:19-21)

Joseph’s Death:
- At 110 years old, Joseph knows he is about to die
- - He tells his family, “ God will surely take care of you and bring you up from this land to the land which He promised on oath to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob.”
- He made them swear to take his bones back to Canaan when they return—
- - His bones were saved as a continual reminder that God would bring them home.

- God knows the future,  history does not surprise Him
- God keeps His promises & will often remind us of them
- God helps bring healing to family relationships
- God’s plans are best for our lives, even when it seems difficult
- God will be a loving shepherd to His people (Genesis 48:15)

- We should forgive one another
- We should try to see God’s bigger plan in the hardships of life
- We should not take revenge, but should let God be in charge of that

“Don’t be afraid. Am I in the place of God? 20 You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives. So then, don’t be afraid. I will provide for you and your children” – Genesis 50:19-21 (NIV)
