Devotion 1 Outline: Due Oct 16 (typed submitted to TurnItIn.com by 8am)

Instructional Time: Unit 3: Psalms and Genesis 27-50
Journal 3-4: Remembering how Jacob tried to make up with Esau… Think of a time in the past when you hurt someone (physically, mentally, emotionally, or socially!) & then tried to make it up to them.
- 1) How did you try to make it up?
- 2) What are some ways in general that you think would be good ways to ‘show’ you are sorry when you’ve done something wrong to someone?
- Write at least a five-sentence paragraph talking about this.

Genesis 32–36: Jacob’s Life in Canaan:
Jacob Reunites w/Esau: God’s angels meet Jacob as he prepares to meet Esau
- - Jacob sends messengers with gifts to kindly greet Esau & seek his favor
- - - Esau, w/400 men, comes to meet Jacob
- - Jacob is greatly afraid & distressed, he plans for the worst & asks God for help:
- - - He recognizes he is unworthy of all the lovingkindness God has already shown
- - - He ‘reminds God’ of God’s promise to Jacob
- - That night, a mysterious man met Jacob and wrestled with him until daybreak
- - - In the morning, God reveals that it was He (His angel) that wrestled with Jacob
- - - Jacob is renamed Israel (“He Struggles w/God”) because “you have striven w/God & with men, & have prevailed.”
- - - Jacob names the place Peniel (“Face of God”)
- - When Jacob and Esau meet, they reconcile andhave peace—Esau won’t kill him!

Jacob at Shechem: Jacob settles outside the city of Shechem
- - Shechem, the prince of this city, rape’s Dinah, Jacob’s daughter
- - Simeon & Levi are furious and take revenge for their sister
- - - They deceive the city w/a covenant that caused all the men to be in great pain
- - - Then they murdered all of the men andlooted the city
- - Jacob flees to Bethel
- - - Here he makes an altar to God and tells his family to stop worshiping false gods
- - - All of the cities are terrified of Jacob and leave him alone
Jacob’s  Travels:
- - At Bethel God again appears to Jacob and blesses him, Jacob again sets up stones to remember it
- - While traveling, Rachel dies giving birth to Benjamin & is buried on the way
- - - Jacob set up a pillar over her grave
- -  Reuben sleeps w/Bilhah, Jacob’s concubine, & Jacob found out…
- - At 180 years old, Isaac dies; Esau & Jacob bury him
- - Esau’s livestock grows, so he moves away from Jacob
- - - His family becomes the Edomites (of Edom)

Genesis 32–36: Jacob’s Life in Canaan - Theology:
- God can handle our ‘struggles’ w/Him; He won’t immediately reject us!
- God can bring peace into families where peace seems impossible

Genesis 32–36: Jacob’s Life in Canaan - Anthropology:
- We should pursue peace with each other (Romans 12:17-19)
- We cannot accomplish God’s will in our anger (James 1:19-20)
- We should lead our families to follow God (c.f. Genesis 18:19)
- We must flee from sexual temptations!  (2 Timothy 2:22)
