Instructional Time: Unit 3: Psalms and Genesis 27-50
Journal 3-1: Read Genesis 25:19-34, then answer:
- 1. What was Rebekah’s 1st unfortunate condition?
- - She was barren
- - Isaac prayed for her and God allowed her to become pregnant
- 2. When God spoke to Rebekah, what did He say…
- - 2a. …was in her womb? Two nations
- - 2b. … would be their relationship? The older (Esau) will serve the younger (Jacob)
- 3. ‘Esau’ refers to the type of coat he was like…  What was that? Red & …. 
- - Red & … Hairy! (this is the meaning of 'Esau')
- - He was given another nick-name, 'Edom' which means 'red'; since he had red hair :-)
- 4. What did Esau become?
- - A man of the country, a skillful hunter
- 5. What does Jacob mean? (see the footnote)
- - He grasps the heel (figuratively it can mean, 'He deceives')
- 6. What did Jacob become?
- - A quiet man, staying among the tents ( a 'homebody')
- 7. Why did Esau sell Jacob his birthright?
- - For food! Red stew
- - He let his hunger control him!
- - - The Hebrews 12:16 refers to Esau as a 'immoral and godless person' because he "sold his own birthright for a single meal" (NAU)
- - - Letting your appetite control your every move, just taking what you want, when you want it--this is not a good idea!
- - The 'Birthright' is the double-inheritance that the firstborn son of a family would get.
- - - Since Isaac had 3 sons, when he died his inheritance would be split into three pieces, Esau would receive two of them, Jacob would receive one---until of course, Esau gave up his because he was hungry

Genesis 25-28: Jacob’s & Esau’s Conflicts:
- Jacob & Esau’s Births:
- - Rebekah was barren, Isaac prayed for her…
- - Rebekah became pregnant w/twins!
- - - They seemed to fight inside her, so she asked God about it
- - - - God shared, “Two nations are in you…the older shall serve the younger.”
- - - 1st) Esau: “Hairy” (because he was covered w/red hair)
- - - - He became a skillful hunter, a man of the field
- - - - Esau was Isaac’s favorite, because Isaac liked the taste of what he hunted
- - - - His nick-name became ‘Edom’ (red)
- - - 2nd) Jacob: “He takes by the heel,” because he held Esau’s heel at birth (his name later meant: “To supplant & deceive”)
- - - - He became a peaceful man, living in tents
- - - - Jacob was  Rebekah’s favorite child

- Esau’s Flaws:
- - Esau came in from work & was famished—
- - - He smelled Jacobs red lintel stew & asked for a bowl.
- - Jacob’s response?
- - - ‘I’ll give you a bowl if you give me your birthright”

- - - Instead of having self-control…
- - - - Esau does this to get a quick meal! (He follows the desires of his flesh.)
- - - This is when he gest the nickname ‘Edom’
- - Sometime after this…
- - - Esau marries two local women who do not serve God
- - - They made life for Isaac and Rebekah bitter.
- - - It would have been better that he married someone closer to his family not because they were racist against others but because the Hittites did not at all follow God!

- Jacob’s Deception: Isaac is getting old, his sight is going bad…
- - He realizes that he may soon die, so…
- - - He tells Esau that he will give him a great blessing
- - - First, he asks him to hunt an animal & prepare him a tasty meal
- - Rebekah heard & quickly worked w/Jacob to deceive Isaac
- - - He pretends to be Esau to get this blessing—and it works!
- - - Isaac gives Jacob God’s special blessing of great prosperity & leadership!
- - Esau returns & found out what Jacob did—he is furious!
- - - After he is ‘blessed’ to serve his brother, Esau plans to kill Jacob
- - Rebekah hears Esau’s plan & talks to Isaac
- - - They send Jacob far north to find a wife—
- - - - From their distant relatives (in Haran, also called Paddan-Aram)
- - Esau tries to please Isaac by…
- - - Taking a wife from Ishmael’s family…
