Dec 11, Mon - The Priests & Day of Atonement

Next Quiz/Test: THURSDAY is your Unit 5 Test

HandoutsNone given

Reminders:
Service Project: The 10 hours, 2 forms, and 1 essay are due on Apr 23, 2018
Devotion 1 PresentationBe ready to present on your day! See class schedule.
Devotion 2: Due Jan 8, Take lessons learned from Devotion 1 as you write this. Re-read the instructions (this lists your Devotion 2 Book Choices). Start this early to make it good!

Instructional Time: Unit 5: Exodus 21 - Leviticus 22
Journal 5-7: Study Packet, Page 15
Read the following verses, answer the Qs:
- Leviticus 10:1-3
- - 1) Who are Aaron’s sons?
- - - Nadab & Abihu --- both of whom are priests.
- - 2) What did they do wrong?
- - - Offer unauthorized (strange, un-permitted) incense in the censers (incense carriers)
- - 3) What was God’s judgment?
- - - The death penalty! They were consumed by fire from God!
- - 4) What quality did God show in this?
- - - His holiness!
- - - When Moses spoke to Aaron about this, Moses said, "Among those who approach me I will show myself holy"
- - - Aaron's sons had treated God with great disrespect by going against His command; this is even worse since they are supposed to teach people what the right way is!
- - 5) What do you think it taught Israel?
- - - Various possible answers... Obey & listen to God, only burn certain incense, treat God with respect as His holiness deserves, etc...
 - Leviticus 10:8-11
- - 6) What were the priests no longer allowed to have before entering the Tabernacle?
- - - Wine or any other fermented (alcoholic) drink
- - - It doesn't say Nadab & Abihu were drunk, but with this law coming right after their death... It seems to imply they may have been acting 'under the influence' when they did this evil thing.
- - 7) What three reasons are given for not drinking alcoholic drinks?
- - - So they can: Distinguish between holy & common (unholy)
- - - So they can: Distinguish between unclean & clean (not literally dirty, but things that are 'declared clean' by God to use in worship & such---more to come on this later)
- - - So they can: Teach the Israelites all the decrees of God

The Priests: Study Packet, Page 7
- Who were the priests?
- - Aaron & his sons were given this job
- - It would pass on to their descendants
- God assigned them a dress code!
- - See more on your Study Packet, pg 7
- What was their job?
- - Priests helped Israel keep a close relationship w/God.
- - Priests, like New Testament teachers were held to a higher expectations of holy living
- - - “Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.” – James 3:1 NIV

The Priests: God isn’t really joking… Whoops…
Nadab & Abihu: Aaron’s sons & priests
- They chose to ignore God’s commands…
- - God gave a recipe to follow for incense
- - - They gave an “unauthorized incense”
- - The result? (Lev 10:2 & 3)
- - - “Fire came out from before the Lord & consumed them, & they died…”
- - - God shared, “Among those who approach me I will be proved holy; in the sight of all the people I will be honored.”
- God then disallows priests from drinking alcohol before serving Him so that they can righty…
- - Distinguish between holy & common (unholy)
- - Distinguish between unclean & clean
- - Teach the Israelites all the decrees of God

Leviticus 1-10: Theology & Anthropology: Study Packet, Page 3
Theology:
- - God provided for us to have a right relationship w/Him restored & maintained
- - Jesus is the ultimate High Priest:
- - - He fully restored our relationship with God
- - - How?
- - - - By offering the final sacrifice for our sin
- - - - Presenting it to God in heaven, the ultimate holy of holies (Heb. 2:17; 9:25, 11-12)
- - Jesus is the ultimate sacrifice:
- - - His sinless life allowed His sacrificial death to bring total forgiveness for our sins, once for all! (Heb. 4:15; 9:12; 7:27)
Anthropology:
- - We need God’s forgiveness for all of our sins,  even unintentional ones!
- - We should deliberately (purposefully) work to:
- - - Maintain a good relationship with God
- - - Repair our relationship with God whenever it is broken
- People that help bring others closer to God must honor God & treat Him as holy!
- Drunkenness keeps us from best being & doing what God desires

- - Entered heavenly temple (Heb 6:19)
- - Entered once for all (Heb 9:25)

- - - Not even Moses can enter!
- God uses this bright cloud to show Israel His presence and leadership
- - He does this throughout their time in the wilderness

Exodus 32-40: Theology & Anthropology: Study Packet, Page 3
Theology:
- - God will not allow unrepentant sinners to go unpunished

Anthropology:
- - Life goes best when we always trust & obey God
- - We must guard ourselves against becoming corrupt, stubborn, impatient, or pressured into sin by people or situations
- - We should pray for others to receive God’s mercy & grace
- - When it is possible & proper, we should confront & correct sin

Leviticus 1-10: Laws for Offerings & Priests: Study Packet, Page 2
Leviticus: This book…
- Teaches us how to worship

- Chapters 23-25: Feasts and Festivals

Leviticus: The Pentateuch Table
Key Idea: Worship (Which I define as our positive response to God, who He is & what He has done)
The Nation: Set Apart (To be made holy!)
The People: Taught
God’s Character: Holy (Which means to be 'set-apart' as something greater & better)
God’s Role: Sanctifier (To make holy)
God’s Command: “Be Holy!”

Leviticus Some Other Details
Author: Moses
Position in Bible: Part of Pentateuch, 3rd book in Bible
Key Verse: Leviticus 11:44-45 (NIV), "I am the LORD your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy...I am the LORD who brought you up out of Egypt to be your God; therefore be holy as I am Holy"
Context: This continues to define the covenant relationship God and Israel had; how did God expect them to act?
Timing of Events: The events in Leviticus seem take place in the one month period between where Exodus ends & Numbers begins
- - This is a pretty short amount of 'time' to cover, considering Exodus (80 yrs) & Genesis (1000s of years!), however the bulk of this book isn't on 'events,' it's on what God is teaching.

Journal 5-5: Study Packet, Page 14; Time to get creative!
- Think about one of the laws that we have looked at in this unit that applies to us today
- - Do NOT pick one of the 10 Commandments
- - Use Study Packet pages 8 & 9 to help
- Draw a 3-panel comic strip of you &/or others rightly living out the application of this law to other people.
- - Clearly explain the application both with the art & with “word bubbles” for talking or use captions

What is the point of these calves?
- We discussed how Aaron may have thought he was 'okay' and 'not making an idol' because often ancient cultures used a calf to represent what their gods stood on...

Ex. 32-40: God Restores & Prepares His People: Study Packet, Page 2
The Golden Calf: Moses has been gone for over a month…
- Israel gets Aaron to fashion a golden calf idol
- - Then they throw a party that gets crazy (out of control)!
- God knows…
- - He told Moses that Israel corrupted themselves
- - - They are a stiff-necked (stubborn)
- God threatens to destroy them!
- - - He says He will instead make a nation out of Moses
- - - Moses asks God to have mercy—and He does!
Returning to Israel...
- - Moses breaks the 10 Cs
- - - How? By throwing them on the ground
- - - This shows what Israel is spiritually doing!
- - - - What laws did they break? 1, 2, & 3, for sure! God was not first, they made an idol, and they vainly claimed that was the god that led them out of Egypt!
- - Moses destroys the golden calf
- - - Burning it, grinding it up, & throwing it into water!
- - Moses confronts Aaron
- - - Aaron denies responsibility,
- - - - He blames the people, saying they made him do it
- - - - He lies, saying he put gold in the oven & "out popped this calf!"
The Levite tribe repents & joins Moses to end the riot
- - 3000 people are killed before the riot stops!

The Covenant is Restored: God disciplines with mercy
Moses returns to God to seek atonement for the people
- - Atonement: The method God provided to deal with human sin and bring them back into a relationship with Himself.
- - - Since God is righteous, He must judge & punish sin
- - - But because He loves us, He provided a method for us to live!
- - One was ‘atoned for’ by offering an animal sacrifice to God
- - - This did this with faith that God accepted it as a substitute for their own punishment of death.
- - - Jesus ultimately offered Himself as the sacrifice for our sins, fulfilling the animal sacrifice system:
- - - - “Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God” – Heb. 10:11-12
God threatens to not personally be with Israel anymore
- - If they keep sinning, they may be destroyed!
- - Moses asks God to change His mind—and He does!
- Moses asks God to show him His glory—And He does!
- Two side notes…
- - God would speak to Moses, ‘face-to-face’
- - - Like a man speaks to his friend
- - Many times, after being in God’s presence—
- - - Moses’ face would glows w/light!
- - - Why? Because God used light to show His glory
- - - - Moses was in God so much, God’s glory was reflected by him

- - Ensure pages 8, 9, & 12 are all done

Reviewing the Handout: The following are answers to these questions on the fourth page of your Unit Handout, “A Sampling of the Proverbs x3”
- 9. How can v4 be encouraging to us in hard times?
- - It reminds us that God is fully in charge (to be sovereign is to be fully in charge), in the good times or bad times
- - God can even use the wicked and days of disaster for His own purposes! (remember the story of Joseph in Genesis)
- 10. How can v4 be a warning to those doing wrong?
- - A day of disaster will come to the wicked!
- 11. From what you know about the Bible, how can v5 be true if one is proud and successful until the day they die?
- - The Bible points out how all will appear before the Judgment seat of Christ to be held accountable for what we have done (Romans 14:10 & 2 Cor. 5:10)
- - - Thankfully as Christians we know that our faith in Jesus Christ will see us through this! See Romans 8:1, "Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus"
- - - Yet, those who are 'Proud of heart" and have never done this will certainly "not go unpunished"
- 12. How does one avoid evil? What does this mean?
- - v6, "Through the fear of the LORD a man avoids evil"
- - The "fear of the LORD" can refer, in part, to a 'fear of punishment' for doing wrong, hence you avoid evil; however, this idea is MUCH bigger than just that!
- - A healthy fear of God is a respect, honoring, and awe of God--who He is & what He does
- 13. When is it better to have a few things than many things?
- - See v8, "Better is a little with righteousness than great revenues with injustice."
- - It is better to have little...
- - - When you have to sin (cheat, lie, steal, manipulate relationships, etc...) to get more stuff
- - - When having more causes you to sin (e.g. some people who are rich are tempted to trust money more than God)
- 14. Does v9 mean we should not make plans? Explain.
- - Nope! We can certainly make plans, but this verse points out that...
- - We must recognize that God's plans don't always match our own!
- - We must be okay with with letting God come in and change our plans,
- - - He is fully in charge (sovereign) after all!
- 15. The ideal ruler is described in vv12-15. What characteristics would you add?
- - Various answers
- 16. What do you think the difference is between wanting to be smart and wanting to be wise?
- - This question was related to v16, "How much better to get wisdom than gold, to choose understanding rather than silver"
- - This verse isn't about getting 'smart,' just getting more knowledge!
- - Wisdom is about how to use that knowledge, putting it into action--this is more valuable than gold or silver
- 17. Describe a time when you saw pride come before a fall.
- - Various answers
- 18. Describe a time when you saw someone suffer for choosing humbleness above pride. (v19)
- - Various answers

- - Put these answers in your own words, give examples!
- 8) Where righteous leads? (See v28)

Quiz 5a Preparation:
Your VersesProverbs 12:21-23, 25 (ESV)
- - Ill: This Hebrew word refers to things that are evil, troublesome, or sorrowful
- - Prudent: The quality of being shrewd or sensible
- - Folly: Foolishness
Your QuestionsBased upon class discussion & your personal reflection of these verses, use complete sentences & your own words to specifically answer:
- - 1) Explain why is Proverbs 12:21 is in the Bible when it doesn’t always seem to be right.
- - - Remember that for proverbs, you need wisdom to use & apply them correctly
- - - There are about three different ways you could answer this:
- - - - Generally vs. Specifically:  Proverbs usually are not meant 'always true' in 'every situation', but 'in general' it is true that living in righteousness leads to less bad times!
- - - - - Generally, the affects of wickedness (e.g. addictions to drugs, alcoholism, broken relationships, time in jail, etc...) are full of much trouble!
- - - - - But, someone who tries to love God and people rarely encounters those things!
- - - - Spiritual vs. Physical: While physically we will have trouble on earth (Jesus shares that in John 16:33), spiritually things are great, if we are made righteous by God! Also, God promised to work all things for the good of those who love Him & are called to His purposes (righteous people, Rom. 8:28)
- - - - Eternal (in Heaven) vs. Now (On Earth): While righteous people encounter hard times here on earth, this is only temporary!  When we die and go to heaven, there is absolutely no ill thing that will hurt us!  Eternally this proverb is absolutely correct!  :-)
- - - Again, show me that you have thought through your answer, explain 'both sides.'
- - 2) Describe how Proverbs 12:25 tells to cheer someone up. Give one Jr. High example of how you could do this.
- - - There are several different answers you could give to this, read the verse & give one that is appropriate to it.

- - - God provided for our spiritual need through Jesus as the ultimate “bread from Heaven”
- - - “I tell you the truth, Moses didn’t give you bread from heaven. My Father did. And now he offers you the true bread from heaven.  The true bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world… I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never be hungry again. Whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” - John 6:32-33, 35

At Mt. Sinai
- God tells Israel, “If you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.”
- Israel says, “We will do everything the Lord has said” (19:5-8).
- God then met the people in a very powerful way!
- - He came as a thick cloud, thunder, lightning, smoke, fire, an earthquake, & a trumpet blast that got louder & louder!

God spoke these 10 Commandments to Israel: Study Packet, Page 8
Location: Mt. Sinai / Mt. Horeb
What? A Covenant!
- - An agreement between two or more that defines their relationship
- - This covenant is very similar to something that was popular at that time & known as a 'Sovereign-Vassal Treaty,' Check out these key parts:
- - - Introduction of the Covenant-Maker (19:1-2)
- - - Description of past relationship (19:3-6)
- - - General rules given (20:1-17)  (The 10 Commandments)
- - - Specific rules given (20:21-23:33) (Which help show the general rules ‘in action’)
The 10 Commandments
- - 1) Have no other gods before the LORD
- - - E.g. Video games, computers, cell phones, ourselves... we have many 'gods' today that we could put over Him!
- - 2) Do not make an idol
- - - Thus the fight over 'icons' in Christian history!
- - 3) Do not misuse the name of the LORD
- - - As a exclamation, curse word, or falsely saying something is His fault (or not His fault) when the opposite is true (lying about Him)
- - 4) Remember the Sabbath day & keep it holy
- - - Rest from work, focus on God
- - 5) Honor your father & mother
- - - The first commandment with a promise, as Jesus points out: That you may have a long life; what they teach us we can learn from!
- - 6) Do not murder
- - - Different from 'killing,' God commanded Israel to 'kill' certainly people for crimes and others in war! Murder is always wrong, but sometimes God has permitted killing due to our sinful world
- - 7) Do not commit adultery
- - - Sleeping with someone who is not your spouse) (Also, Jesus points out in the New Testament that people commit adultery and murder in their heart with wrong attitudes, like lust or fury
- - 8) Do not steal
- - - E.g. Illegally downloaded music
- - - This includes 'borrowing without permission'...
- - 9) Do not give a false testimony
- - - To lie, especially when asked to tell what happened
- - 10) Do not covet
- - - Which is an intense, wish-filled desire for what someone else has (it involves envy & jealousy)
- - - The key 'opposite' here is to be content with what God has given you.

- God sends “bread from heaven”
- - This becomes named “manna,” meaning: “What is it?”
- - God gives special collection rules to test Israel
- - - Only collect enough for each day – We trust God for our daily bread!
- - - Collect twice the amount the day before the Sabbath
- - - Don’t collect on the Sabbath – We devote this day to Him in rest
- - Some quickly fail this test…

War
- When Amalekites attack Israel…
- - Moses sends Joshua to lead the fight against them!
- - Joshua leads the first army of Israel
- Moses watches from a neighboring hill
- - When he holds his hands & staff up…
- - - Israel begins to win! :-D

- - - The Amalekites begin to win! D-:
- - So, Aaron & Hur help Moses
- - - They hold up his arms & find a seat for him
- - - Finally, Israel totally wins!
- In celebration & worship, Moses built an altar to God
- - He calls it, “The LORD is my Banner”

The Plagues vs. Egypt's gods: For the classes that had time, at this point we looked at some charts that showed how the plagues directly attacked what the Egyptian's thought were gods.

The Passover & Jesus: Study Packet, Page 8 & 1 – Short Answer 2
Some Key Bible Verses
- - When Prophesying about the Messiah, Isaiah says He will be
- - - “…like a lamb that is led to slaughter…” (Isaiah 53:7)
- - John the Baptist sees Jesus and says He is…
- - - “…the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” (Jn 1:29)
- - Jesus’ friend, Peter shares that
- - - Christians “were not redeemed w/perishable things … but w/precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.” (1 Peter 1:18-19)
- - Paul very directly relates Christianity & Jesus to both of feasts—
- - - “Clean out the old leaven so that you may be a new lump, just as you are in fact unleavened. For Christ our Passover also has been sacrificed.” (1 Corinthians 5:7)
- - - - In the New Testament, sometimes leaven/yeast represented sin
- - - - - Since just as a little leaven will affect an entire piece of dough for bread, so a little sin will affect our entire life!
- - - - - Here we are encouraged to clean out the old leaven/sin
So, how is Jesus like the Passover Lamb? A direct comparison
- - For the Passover Lamb:
- - - It was without any physical blemish (Ex 12:5)
- - - No bones broken (Ex 12:46)
- - - Sacrificed to save them from physical death
- - - It’s sacrifice didn’t automatically save them, they had to choose to put it over their doors
- - For Jesus in the New Testament:
- - - Jesus was without any spiritual blemish, sin
- - - - 2 Cor. 5:21, “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” (NIV)
- - - No bones broken
- - - - John 19:32-33, 36, “32 The soldiers therefore came and broke the legs of the first man who had been crucified with Jesus, and then those of the other. 33 But when they came to Jesus and found that he was already dead, they did not break his legs. . . 36 These things happened so that the scripture would be fulfilled: “Not one of his bones will be broken”” (NIV)
- - - - Also see Psalm 22:17 & 34:20
- - - Sacrificed to save us from spiritual death (the worst consequence of Adam & Eve's sin)
- - - His sacrifice didn’t automatically save all, we have to choose to, in faith, accept it over our lives (Rom 10:9-10)
