Journal 5-7: Study Packet, Page 15
Read the following verses, answer the Qs:
- Leviticus 10:1-3
- - 1) Who are Aaron’s sons?
- - - Nadab & Abihu --- both of whom are priests.
- - 2) What did they do wrong?
- - - Offer unauthorized (strange, un-permitted) incense in the censers (incense carriers)
- - 3) What was God’s judgment?
- - - The death penalty! They were consumed by fire from God!
- - 4) What quality did God show in this?
- - - His holiness!
- - - When Moses spoke to Aaron about this, Moses said, "Among those who approach me I will show myself holy"
- - - Aaron's sons had treated God with great disrespect by going against His command; this is even worse since they are supposed to teach people what the right way is!
- - 5) What do you think it taught Israel?
- - - Various possible answers... Obey & listen to God, only burn certain incense, treat God with respect as His holiness deserves, etc...
- Leviticus 10:8-11
- - 6) What were the priests no longer allowed to have before entering the Tabernacle?
- - - Wine or any other fermented (alcoholic) drink
- - - It doesn't say Nadab & Abihu were drunk, but with this law coming right after their death... It seems to imply they may have been acting 'under the influence' when they did this evil thing.
- - 7) What three reasons are given for not drinking alcoholic drinks?
- - - So they can: Distinguish between holy & common (unholy)
- - - So they can: Distinguish between unclean & clean (not literally dirty, but things that are 'declared clean' by God to use in worship & such---more to come on this later)
- - - So they can: Teach the Israelites all the decrees of God
The Priests: Study Packet, Page 7
- Who were the priests?
- - Aaron & his sons were given this job
- - It would pass on to their descendants
- God assigned them a dress code!
- - See more on your Study Packet, pg 7
- What was their job?
- - Priests helped Israel keep a close relationship w/God.
- - Priests, like New Testament teachers were held to a higher expectations of holy living
- - - “Not many of you should become teachers, my fellow believers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly.” – James 3:1 NIV
The Priests: God isn’t really joking… Whoops…
- Nadab & Abihu: Aaron’s sons & priests
- They chose to ignore God’s commands…
- - God gave a recipe to follow for incense
- - - They gave an “unauthorized incense”
- - The result? (Lev 10:2 & 3)
- - - “Fire came out from before the Lord & consumed them, & they died…”
- - - God shared, “Among those who approach me I will be proved holy; in the sight of all the people I will be honored.”
- God then disallows priests from drinking alcohol before serving Him so that they can righty…
- - Distinguish between holy & common (unholy)
- - Distinguish between unclean & clean
- - Teach the Israelites all the decrees of God
Leviticus 1-10: Theology & Anthropology: Study Packet, Page 3
- Theology:
- - God provided for us to have a right relationship w/Him restored & maintained
- - Jesus is the ultimate High Priest:
- - - He fully restored our relationship with God
- - - How?
- - - - By offering the final sacrifice for our sin
- - - - Presenting it to God in heaven, the ultimate holy of holies (Heb. 2:17; 9:25, 11-12)
- - Jesus is the ultimate sacrifice:
- - - His sinless life allowed His sacrificial death to bring total forgiveness for our sins, once for all! (Heb. 4:15; 9:12; 7:27)
- Anthropology:
- - We need God’s forgiveness for all of our sins, even unintentional ones!
- - We should deliberately (purposefully) work to:
- - - Maintain a good relationship with God
- - - Repair our relationship with God whenever it is broken
- People that help bring others closer to God must honor God & treat Him as holy!
- Drunkenness keeps us from best being & doing what God desires
