Lev. 11-22: Various Laws: Food, Health, Daily Life: Study Packet, Page 2
Holiness: 
- God commands Israel, “Be holy, because I am holy” (Lev. 11:15).
- He gives them many laws to do this very thing.

Laws of Clean & Unclean Animals: 
God gave laws distinguishing clean (able to be eaten) & unclean animals for two reasons:
- - Hygiene: Many of the forbidden animals carried diseases!
- - Holiness: Some association with false religions
Clean Animals:
- - Mammals: Lv 11:3-7, Cloven hoofs & chew cud
- - Birds: See Unclean
- - Reptiles: None!
- - Water Animals: Lv11:9-12, Must have both fins & scales
- - Insects: Lv 11:20-23, Any from the grasshopper family
Unclean Animals:
- - Mammals: Carnivores & Those not in ‘Clean’
- - Birds: Lv 11:13-19, Bird of Prey, Scavengers
- - Reptiles: All! Lv 11:29-30
- - Water Animals: Those not in ‘Clean’
- - Insects: Winged quadrupeds

Laws for Health: God addresses many issues, such as…
- - Childbearing
- - Leprosy
- - Infected houses (mildew)
- - General unhealthiness

The Day of Atonement: Lev. 16
- Led by the High Priest (leading priest for that year)
- Atonement refers to the method God provided to…
- - Deal with human sin
- - Bring them back into a right relationship with Himself
- Annually… 
- - The High Priest offered sacrifices for Israel’s sins
- - Blood from these was placed on the Mercy Seat
- - Scapegoat: Israel’s sins were symbolically ‘put onto’ a goat & the goat was released into the wilderness
- Result?
- - God gave annual forgiveness to Israel for all of their sins!

Laws for civil, criminal, & ceremonial issues: These laws emphasize several things, including...
Love of God: Israel’s first priority!
Love of Others: Seen through acting righteously & justly toward each other (Lev. 19:18)
The Value of Human Life: Shown through their treatment of animals & humans blood (symbolizing life, Lev. 17:11)
Sexual Purity: A thing of great importance to God!
- - Marrying relatives is now forbidden (Parent, sibling, half-sibling, aunt/uncle, grandchild (even step- & in-laws relatives were excluded!)
Separation from those not following God: “...I am the LORD your God, who has set you apart from the nations… You are to be holy to me because I, the LORD, am holy, and I have set you apart from the nations to be my own.” Lev. 20:24–26 (NIV)
Priest Laws: Those who taught others how to follow God had special laws to help them do their job even better

Theology:
- - God commands & teaches us how to be holy as He is holy
- - God cares about our holiness and health!
- - God offers total forgiveness to those who receive it/Him
- - Our total atonement was provided through Jesus:
- - - As the ultimate High Priest
- - - - And the final sacrifice,
- - - He bore the sins of many, making them ‘at one’ w/God
- - - - “Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many…” - Heb. 9:28
Anthropology:
- - Our sins earn us a death that we cannot escape on our own
- - - “The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” – Rom. 6:23 (NIV)
- - - We must accept the atonement that God provides to have a good relationship w/Him
- - - We must remove sin from ourlives & communities, w/God’s help!
- - Christians should be holy from those who do not follow God
- - Loving God must be the first priority of our life
- - We should practically love our neighbor as ourselves
