Numbers 10-19 – Rejecting God: Study Packet, Page 2
Things quickly go wrong when Israel chooses to…
- Reject God’s Provision: Multiple times Israel complains, being unsatisfied w/God’s care, guidance, & provision.
- - God disciplines them w/fire around their camp, providing way more meat than they need, and sending a plague!
- - Moses feels overwhelmed & asks for death or for help!
- - - God gives him 70 spirit filled men to help lead Israel
- Reject God’s Prophet: Miriam/Aaron criticize & doubt Moses
- - God defends Moses, calling him “a very humble man, more so than any man on the face of the earth … faithful in all My (God’s) household” (HCSB). Miriam & Aaron are disciplined
- - Moses prays for God to have grace on them & He does.
- Reject God’s Gifts: God brings Israel to the Promised Land!
- - We watched a video that dramatically showed this story
- - 12 spies explore the land & find it populated by strong people
- - - All but two (Joshua & Caleb) lead the people to doubt God can really give them this land; they complain & want to return to Egypt.
- - When God tells Moses He will destroy Moses prays for God to have mercy and He does
- - - Israel will spend 40 years in the wilderness until everyone 20+ years old died (except Joshua & Caleb); then their children will enter
- - Israel tries to enter the Promised Land (also known as Canaan) on their own power—they fail & flee into the wilderness
- Reject God’s Priest: Korah (a Levite) leads 250 strong leaders to rebel by rejecting Aaron & his family as the only priests.
- - God discipline: Korah’s 250 followers are consumed by fire, the ground ‘swallows’ he & his direct followers, but his sons survive!
- - When Israel blames Moses for this, 14,700 more die in a plague as Moses & Aaron again pray for God to have mercy!
- - God then shows that He chose Aaron’s family to be the priests by miraculously causing Aaron’s dead wooden staff to sprout, bud, blossom, & produce almonds overnight!
- - God then gives more rules for Levites and Priests
