- - Abraham seeks God’s grace on this city
- - Lot now lives inside Sodom!)
- Lot resists it
- - But because of God's relationship with Abraham, He brings Lot and his family from this very evil city before it is destroyed
- After this…
- - Lot lives with his daughters in a cave away from everyone
- - His daughters get two children from him
- - - Moab: “From Father”

- Uncontrolled sin causes horrible things
- We are utterly destroyed by uncontrolled sin

Abimelech & Isaac:
- Genesis 20: Abraham tricks Abimelech just like he had with the Egyptian Pharaoh!
- - This name means, "My Father is King" from Hebrew Ab (Father) and Melech (King)
- - This was likely a title for the ruler of a people group and not a personal name (like 'Pharaoh' for the Egyptians)
- Genesis 21:
- - Isaac is born! (remember, his name means "He Laughs")
- - Things get complex when Ishmael makes fun of Isaac & Sarah wants Hagar & Ishmael to leave.
- - - Though Abraham does not want to do this, God encourages him that it will be okay & that Ishmael will also be blessed; so he sends Hagar away
- - At the end of this Chapter, Abraham makes a covenant w/Abimelech so they no longer fight
Genesis 20-21) Trusting God through Conflicts:
- Abraham vs. Abimelech (“My Father is King,” kingly title): Near Gera
- - Abraham again lies about Sarah.
- - When Abimelech takes her…
- - - God disciplines him
- - But when Abraham prays for him…
- - - God heals him
- Sarah vs. Hagar:
- - After Isaac is born to Sarah…
- - - She demands that Abraham send Hagar & Ishmael away.
- - God encourages Abraham
- - - He will take care of Hagar & Ishmael
- - - Abraham can send them away.
- Abraham vs. Abimelech:
- - Abimelech asks for a covenant of kindness—
- - - Between his people & Abraham's people.
- - Abraham agrees—
- - - Adding protection for the wells that his people dug…
- - - But Abimelech's people stole…
Genesis 20-21) Trusting God through Conflicts) Theology:
- God works out His plans even through our conflicts
Genesis 20-21) Trusting God through Conflicts) Anthropology:

Genesis 22: God Provides the Sacrifice:
- God told Abraham,
- - “Take now your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering." – Genesis 22:2
- Abraham immediately obeys God
- - Still trusting that God will somehow keep His promise to provide countless descendants through Isaac (21:12)!
- - "Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead" – Hebrews 11:19a, NIV
- At the last moment…
- - God stops Abraham, providing a ram instead!
- And He confirms His covenant w/Abraham
- - “I will greatly bless you, & I will greatly multiply your seed as the stars of the heavens & as the sand which is on the seashore”– Gen. 22:17
- - Abraham gives God the name YHWH-Jireh ("The Lord Will Provide")
Genesis 22: God Provides the Sacrifice) Theology:
- God will provide for us
- - God's ultimate provision was found through Jesus—God's only Son, whom He loves—

- God highly values human life
Genesis 22: God Provides the Sacrifice) Anthropology:
- Following God requires a total commitment from us
- Like Abraham did, we demonstrate our faith is real through actions
- Sarah’s Death:
- - When Sarah dies—
- - - Abraham bargains with Ephron the Hittite & buys land for a grave
- - Abraham sends a servant to find a wife for Isaac (from his distant family)
- - - God answers this servant's prayer & brings him to Rebekah
- - - Rebekah is the sister of Laban & granddaughter of Nahor, Abraham’s brother
- - Isaac loves Rebekah
- - - With her he finds comfort after his mother’s death
- - - This whole story really is a sweet one! :-)
- Abraham’s Death:
- - Abraham married Keturah, who bore him 6 more sons
- - - Abraham gives gifts to each of these and…
- - - - Sends them away
- - - - So they wouldn’t compete with Isaac
- - - Isaac has God's greatest blessing & Abraham's primary inheritance
- -Abraham dies at 175 years old
- - - His sons, Isaac & Ishmael, bury him where Sarah was buried
- God’s Blessings on Ishmael & Isaac:
