- - 3) Why wasn’t the other’s accepted? (vv6-7)
- - - He did not do right (we don't know exactly what was wrong, see below)
- - 4) How is sin described?
- - - Like a lion, crouching, ready to attack! (See 1 Peter 5:8)
- - More time? Read 1 Peter 5:8 and write down how Satan is described.
- - - Our adversary, prowling around "like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour"

Picture Day: This took up a lot of time for today .

Genesis 4: Cain and Abel: Fill this in on page 2 of your Study Packet
Cain (1st son) was jealous of Abel (2nd son)
- - Why? Both gave offerings to God, but God only accepted Abel’s offering
- - Something about how Cain gave his offering was bad
- - - The Bible doesn't specifically tell us why this is, but Mr. Ellis is confident that it is a matter of their heart and motivations
- - - Cain's attitude and reasons for bringing his offering was probably quite different from Abel's
God told Cain, “Sin is crouching at the door and its desire is for you, but you must master it.” (Gen. 4:7)
- - Sin came from two places:
- - - Inside Cain: Cain's own jealousy
- - - Outside Cain: Temptation from the devil, instead of listening and submitting to God…
- - Cain killed Abel and faced consequences.
- - - To remember which some was which, think 'Killer Cain' the K and C go together nicely.
- - - When God confronts Cain, Cain denies responsibility (just like his parents!)
- - - - God holds him accountable for his sin and suffers several consequences
- - - - Yet God has mercy on him still, allowing him to live and protecting him from the revenge of others
- - Cain took his wife and moved away.
- - - Who was Cain’s wife? See Genesis 5:4
- - - - Apparently it was a sister!?!
- - - - Weird? Gross?  To us--Yes
- - - - But to Adam and Eve's family, they wouldn't think of it that way
- - - - Genetically we can't even do this healthily today, but with everything being so close to the original "Very Good!", that wouldn't have been an issue for Adam and Eve's family
- After Cain: Cain's family sadly takes after his sinful ways
- - Genesis 4:19) What does Lamech (Cain’s descendant) have 1st? 2 wives!
- - Genesis 4:23-24) What does Lamech brag about? Killing someone!
- Sin keeps getting worse and worse!
- - So, how bad will sin get?  We'll find out in the next chapters!

Genesis 4: What does this teach us about God (Theology) and People (Anthropology)
Fill this out on page 3 of your Study Packet
God is willing to forgive
- - But He will bring judgment
We quickly lose control to sin
- - Consider 1 Peter 5:8, “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” (ESV)
- - Uncontrolled sin quickly causes horrible things
- - We must guard ourselves against sin

Quiz 1b Preparation:
Your VersesGenesis 2:18…22-23
Vocabulary Words: You are not quizzed on these, but, they are good to know
- - Good: Pleasant, desirable
Your Questions: Based upon our class discussion & your personal reflection, use complete sentences to specifically answer:
- - 1) Is it an insult for the Bible to call the woman a helper? Why?
- - - No, because the Bible calls God our helper (it's the same Hebrew word!)
- - - - “… Moses said … My father’s God was my helper; he saved me from the sword of Pharaoh” - Exodus 18:3-4 (NIV)
- - - - “There is no one like the God of Jeshurun, who rides on the heavens to help you …” - Deuteronomy 33:26 (NIV)
- - - - “We wait in hope for the Lord; he is our help and our shield.” - Psalm 33:20 (NIV)
- - - So clearly this isn't an insult--on the contrary, it is an honor!
- - 2) What are two or more things that being made from Adam’s rib implies about men and women?
- - - We’re made from the same stuff!
- - - We are equal
- - - Need each other to be completely what God intends! We are to be partners

Book Report Key Due-DatesTitle & Author (Mon, Sep. 11, written on a paper in class), Pre-Reading Form (Mon, Sep. 25, @ start of class), Book Report/Project (Mon, Nov. 13, report on TurnItIn.com / Art @ start of class)

Instructional Time: Unit 1 - Genesis 1-11
Journal: None given, students studied for & then took their quiz.

Genesis 3) The Fall of Mankind: Study Packet, Page 2
- What did God say was forbidden for Adam and Eve? Genesis 2:16-17
- - The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil
- A serpent (described as 'more crafty than any of the wild animals.') tempted Eve (Adam's wife) to sin
- - Rev. 20:2 shares that the serpent was Satan (also see Rev. 12:9 and John 8:44)
- - - Among other things the Bible describes Satan as "Father of Lies" and the "Serpent of Old""
- - Satan cast doubt
- - - On God’s words by misquoting God and accusing Him of lying:
- - - - "You must not eat from any tree in the garden"
- - - - "You will not surely die. . . your eyes will be opened and you will be like God."
- - - On God's character: By suggesting that God doesn't want Eve to have what's best for her
- Eve chose to sin
- - She shared with Adam, who also chose to sin.
- - Both of them then felt shame and ran from God
- God reached out to them
- - He gave them consequences,
- - But He also promised a future hope
- Adam and Eve were sent out of the Garden of Eden (which was a paradise on earth)

Genesis 3) The Fall of Mankind: Study Packet, Page 3
- What does this teach us about God (Theology) and People (Anthropology)
TheologyGod
- - Cannot allow sin
- - Is willing to forgive and heal us
- - Planned our salvation from sin from the beginning: This is seen in…
- - - The animal being killed instead of Adam and Eve
- - - The curse of Satan referencing Eve’s male descendant who would crush him

AnthropologyWe: Are broken by sin
- - Sin tempted us because
- - - Looked good to the eyes: Lust of the eyes
- - - Seemed good for food: Lust of the flesh
- - - Desirable to gain wisdom like God: Selfish Pride (“The boastful pride of life”)
- - - Look at 1 John 2:16 for a summary of these things
- - - - “For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. ” (NASB)
- - - - Lust means 'desire,' you could even say 'evil desire'
- - - - Pride is basically wanting, pretending, or being more than God made you to be.
- - Sin causes us to
- - - Feel shame: We have done wrong and we know it!
- - - - Adam and Eve had done something wrong and now experienced shame and guilt, wanting to cover themselves up. Also leading them to what is next
- - - Run / hide from God: Instead of coming to Him for a relationship and healing
- - - - God designed us for a relationship with Him, sin caused a break in this.
- - - Blame others for our sins: Instead of being responsible for our actions
- - Sin killed us: Read Genesis 3:14-19 for God's explanations of the consequences of sin.
- - - Spiritually: Our relationship w/God was broken
- - - - Instead of knowing and growing closer to Him, we now naturally run and hide from Him.
- - - Relationally: Our relationships w/each other were broken
- - - Physically: We will work hard to live and then we will die.
- - There is still hope for life
- - - God could have killed us all right there, but He didn’t!
- - - God made Adam and Eve animal skin clothes,
- - - - Through the death of an animal, Adam and Eve's shame was (partially) taken away.
- - - - This is a hint at the future work of Jesus, through His death, our ultimate sin and shame was taken away!
- - - Adam named his wife Eve, “Living”

Genesis 2:4-25) Creation of Mankind: Study Packet, Page 3
- What does this teach us about God (Theology) and People (Anthropology)
Theology:

Genesis 1:1-2:3) Creation of All: Study Packet, Page 2
- In the beginning God Created:
- - God did this merely through speaking.
- The Hebrew emphasizes that each of the following was made on its own day:
- - Day 1) Heavens, Earth, Light
- - Day 2) Sky
- - Day 3) Dry land, plants

- - Transcendent: Above all
- - Sovereign: Fully in charge
- - Powerful: All-mighty
- - Creator: Able to make everything simply by speaking!
- - - John 1:1-3 shares that Jesus was the Creator)
Anthropology: We...
- - Need to balance work and rest
- - God set this pattern for us, although He didn't *need* to (e.g. He wasn't 'tired')

The below notes are for students who want to check their work on the in-class worksheet

In the Beginning...) Genesis 1 (ESV): Study Packet, Page 6
If students wanted to check their work for this page, here are the answers:
1. What do the first four words of the Bible tell us?
- - He has always been there, He was not created, He made all things.
2. What does God do in order to create?
- - Speak!
3. Vv 12, 18, 25) What does God “see” at the end of almost every day?
- - ‘It was good’
4. What is created first? Light or the sun? Explain.
- - Light (day 1); Sun (day 4)
- - - Perhaps the 'light' is just energy in general?
- - - Perhaps the light came from God and His presence?
- - - What do you think?
5. What were the first animals created?
- - Water Creatures (v20, day 5)
6. Is evolution consistent with the creation account?
- - Explain. Nope!
- - - a. The Bible is clear that the earth and ourselves were not an 'accident,' but something God deliberately created!
- - - b. The order of creation does not match the order the theory of evolution would need
- - - c. The 'Day' is emphasized in too main ways! ‘Yom’ is the Hebrew for day which means a literal 24 hour period (although in poetry it could mean something more, as made evident by context), but then it goes further by using 'and there was evening/morning' for each Day, suggesting further these were literal 24 hr periods (Also see Ex 20:11, 31:17); so it didn't take millions/billions of years in the Bible!
- - d. Plants and animals are each made ‘after their kind’ (see verses 11, 12, 21, 24-25); they don’t ‘change kinds’ as evolution would require
7. v26) How is man’s creation different from the animals?
- - God created them in His own image and breathed life into them!
8. v26) What job is given to man?
- - To rule over fish/birds/livestock/all earth/all creatures that move along ground. Also in 2:15, Tend the garden
9) This was covered in the Memory Quiz Prep.
10) Is the image of God male or female?
- - Explain. It is 'both;' Genesis 1:27 points out that the word 'Man' references 'them,' male and females
11) What is the first command given to mankind? (two parts) (v28)
- - Be fruitful and multiply;
- - Fill the earth and subdue it (Rule over the creation)
12) Vv 29-30) What food was given to man & the creatures? What is significant about this?
- - Vegetables were given to eat.
- - At this time no meat was eaten and so nothing was killed!
13) v31) What was God's final viewpoint of His creation?
- - It was "Very Good!"

Genesis 2 Handout Review: Study Packet, Page 7
If students wanted to check their work for this page, here are the answers:
- 1. v2) From what did God rest on the 7th day?
- - All the work He did
- 2. Why do you think God created in 6 days and rested on the 7 (also known as the ‘Sabbath’)?
- - Likely to create a pattern for us!
- - - Think, He could have worked for 19 days and rested on the 20th.
- - - Then we'd have 18 days of school?!?
- - - Instead He showed us that 6 days of work is a healthy amount and set that as a pattern.
- - Also, He showed us the importance of rest
- - - He, the Almighty God of the Universe, chose to rest on the 7th day
- - - Thus setting an example for us to follow in putting rest into our own life.
- - - In Mark 2:27 Jesus tells us, "The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath" -- We weren't made to serve the Sabbath, rather, it is to our benefit to rest on the Sabbath!
- - As a side note:
- - - Early Jews had their Sabbath on the 7th day of the week (Saturday).
- - - Early Christians started meeting on Sunday, though, in recognition of Jesus' resurrection from the dead on Sunday
- - - This became known as 'The Lord's Day" (see Acts 20:7 and Revelation 1:10, 1 Corinthians 16:2)
- 3. v7) How was man formed?
- - Out of the dust of the ground; then God breathed life into him! (Wow! What a personal connection God has with us!)
- 4. Describe the place God made for man to live in.
- - The Garden of Eden, filled with everything man would need to survive and live peacefully with God
- 5. v9) What two objects were located in the middle of the garden?
- - Two Objects:
- - - The Tree of Life: Eating it allowed you to live forever
- - - The Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil: Eating it gave you knowledge... of good and evil...
- - At this time Adam and Eve did not know evil, only 'good' by obeying and following God)
- - Why would God even put this tree here that would allow Adam and Eve to disobey Him?
- - - Think, if you were a parent...
- - - - Would you build a robot child who would do everything you wanted merely because he/she was programmed to?
- - - - Or would you rather have a real child who chooses to love you on their own freedom?
- - - KEY: God didn't want robots, He wanted people who chose to follow Him
- - - - In order for us to truly have this relationship with God, we had to be able to choose to not follow Him!
- - - - - There are two areas Adam and Eve had a choice to follow God in: Tending the garden and Eating of the bad tree
- - - - - Now days we have many more choices... Make them wisely!
- 6. What was man to do in the garden?
- - Take care of it, tend it.
- 7. v17) What was the one thing man was forbidden to do?
- - Eat of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil
- 8. What would be the consequences for disobedience? Explain. Death!
- - Two types of Death: (we will see this more in the next chapter)
- - - Spiritual Death: Primary problem--We were created to have a spiritual relationship with God, sinning immediately broke this, now we run and hide from God
- - - Physical Death: We would no longer be allowed to eat from the Tree of Life, thus we would die
- - - Social Death: Suddenly they start fighting and blaming each other!
- 9. What did God discover about the man?
- - It was not good for him to be alone! We were made to have a partner. :-)
- 10. What did man do for the animals?
- - Name them (he had a lot of pets!)
- 11. How did God form the woman?
- - What is significant about this? God formed woman from the rib of a man.
- - For the significance of this, see our next Memory Verse Quiz Review.
- 12. v23) Why did Adam react the way he did to the woman?
- - He broke into poetry! (Any of you guys done that when you saw a woman?).
- - He called her woman (Ishshah, in Hebrew), a name closely related to his own title of man (Ish)
- 13. v24) What does this teach us about marriage?
- - Man is to leave his parents and be united with his wife
- 14. v25) Why did the man and woman feel no shame?
- - They had not yet sinned!
- - Though they were naked, they had no sin and didn't feel any shame or embarrassment.
- - When we have shame we want to cover it up and hide it, but since they did no wrong, they didn't have this.

Aug 22, Tue - The Pentateuch & Genesis 1

Next Quiz/Test: Friday is Quiz 1a: Genesis 1:27-28 (ESV)

Handouts: The Pentateuch Table (pink)

Reminders:

Book Report Key Due-DatesTitle & Author (Mon, Sep. 11, written on a paper in class), Pre-Reading Form (Mon, Sep. 25, @ start of class), Book Report/Project (Mon, Nov. 13, report on TurnItIn.com / Art @ start of class)

Instructional Time: Unit 1 - Genesis 1-11
Journal 1-1: Answer this on page 11 of your Unit 1 Study Packet
- Read John 1:1-3 and 1:14
1) How is this similar to the beginning of Genesis (which you read yesterday)?
- - Read Gen 1:1 to see!
2) What do these verses teach about Jesus?
- - In verse 14 we see how 'The Word' became flesh, meaning that Jesus is 'The Word'
- - Where/When was He? With God in the beginning of everything!
- - - Jesus was there at the beginning--He did not merely 'appear' or 'be made' when the New Testament happened
- - What did He do? Jesus is the Creator! (v3)
- - - Jesus is the part of the Trinity (God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Spirit) that actually created all things!
- - - This is one reason why His nick-name is 'The Word,' because in the beginning, God 'spoke' and creation happened--it was His words that did it!

- Side Notes:
- - The Old Testament has no 'clear picture' of the Trinity, although there are 'hints' toward it (e.g. some say when God speaks of Himself as "Us" this is one such hint)
- - John helps us, then, to see how Jesus was active even in the Old Testament days.

Quiz Questions: I answered any final questions about our first quiz (Friday)

The Pentateuch Table:

- We will go over these as a class later

Book Report: We finished talking through the Pre-Reading Form instructions.

Quiz 1a Preparation: We took notes for this on page 4 of our Study packet
Vocabulary Words: You are not quizzed on these, but, they are good to know
- - Likeness: To be like or similar to
- - Subdue: To put under your control (we subdue pets so they are safe & kind to us)
- - Dominion: To be in charge of, to have control over
Your VersesGenesis 1:27-28 (ESV)
Your Questions: Based upon class discussion & your personal reflection of these verses, use complete sentences & your own words to specifically answer:
- - 1) Describe three different things that it means for humans to be made in God’s image.
- - - It does NOT mean that we physically look like God. The Old Testament emphasizes that God is Spirit, so this Old Testament would refer to something different
- - - - Jesus did come as a man, and we 'look like Him,' but that is not the context of this verse.
- - - The Bible is not specific on exactly what being made in God's image means, but in these verses we see... *remember these things!*
- - - - We are different from the animals: In the Bible, there is a clear distinction between humans & animals.  Animals are important & should be treated well, but people are MUCH more important!
- - - - We have free will:
- - - - - Seen in how God gave us 'rule' over creation (we are care-takers who must make decisions & do things with this)
- - - - - This is also seen in how we can create things (e.g. the names of animals, culture, and more!)
- - - - We can relate to God: We can have a real, loving relationship with God
- - - - - Think of your pet dog or cat -- you don't have the same relationship with those as you do with a person, do you? Of course not! You are 'in the same image' of another person, but a dog or cat is 'a different kind'
- - - - - Being made in the 'image of God' means that we can have a relationship with Him in a special & powerful way!
- - - Also note: Both males & females are made in the image of God (v27)

- - 2) So, how should this affect your view and treatment of others?
- - - Many things you could put here, but some basic ideas are:
- - - -We should respect and honor them because they are made in God's image, just like us
- - - -We should view others as having great/high value, God made them Himself & made them in His image & likeness!
- - - - Show me that you have thought about this question on your own, don't simply memorize my two examples--feel free to add your own, from your own reflection!

Welcome to Bible 7: :An Old Testament Study!

Greetings All!

Welcome and congratulations on finding my class notes blog! I recommend that you bookmark this page (add it to your favorites) so that you can easily access it in the future.

On this blog you will find all sorts of helpful information for students & their parents. Nearly every day of school (by around 5pm) this blog is updated based upon our classroom discussion and activities. To find a previous day of notes not on the front page anymore, use the 'Blog Archives' on the right to find the specific day required. You can also use the 'search' function in the top left white bar to find a specific word, type it in & press enter.

Were you absent one day?
Check back here to see what we talked about in class! Class Notes from each day of instruction will be found here.  Realize that all my Bible classes for this grade share this blog, so some things you missed may have been covered in yesterday's notes, too. Ask a friend to make sure you've got everything.

Do you have a Memory Quiz to study for?
Find notes from our class discussions about this quiz posted here during the week prior to the quiz! Usually these notes will have text that is colored orange to make it easier to find when scrolling through my blog.

Do you have a Unit Test to study for?
Whatever I will test you on (with very few exceptions) has already appeared on the blog posts for that unit. As we go through each unit, you will have a 'Test Study Guide' on your 'Unit Study Packet.' Throughout class discussions you should be listening for key information & filling it in.  If you miss something, use these daily blog postings to fill in the blank areas. The day before a test we have a review game in class, notes from that will be posted on this blog for your last night of studying before your test.

Do you think you missed an important reminder in class?
Key reminders given in class are posted at the top of each day's blog.

Please do remember, this blog does not replace RenWeb or in-class handouts--it compliments them. You will still need to regularly check RenWeb. Check RenWeb daily for assignment due dates, announcements, some handout digital copies, and other key information.

I wish you the best in the coming year ahead and look forward to joining you on your journey through it! Please feel free to e-mail me (see RenWeb or your syllabus for e-mail address) if you have any questions or concerns.

Sincerely,
Mr. Ellis
