Journal 7-2: Deuteronomy is Moses’ last words to Israel before he dies and they entered the promised land. Here, much of Israel’s laws & history with God (from the Pentateuch) is re-visited—
- Tell of a time that someone ‘repeated the rules’ for you. Why do you think they did it? How do you think they wanted it to help?
- Tell of a time that someone reminded you of what you did in the past and it wasn’t to ‘rub it in.’ Why do you think they did this? How do you think they wanted this to help?
- Why do you think Moses did this? Below are some important reasons I gave
- - The Law & their history are both very important! (describing how they can have a relationship with God & explaining where they came from)
- - This is a new group of adults, many were not even born when the first Law was given & they hadn't lived through some of the history explained.
- - Moses wants to leave them with what’s most important before he dies—how to keep a strong relationship with God
- - They are just about to enter the Promised Land, if they don't follow the Law they will lose the land—Moses doesn't want this to happen!

Map of Where They Are: I showed a map of where Israel is at this point, east of the Jordan River, in the wilderness

Deuteronomy: Its Introduction
- 1:5 - 3:29) Moses surveys their recent history
- Deut. 4) Israel urged to obey God!
- - 4:24) How is God described?
- - - A Consuming Fire: Think of the imagery Israel has had these past 40 years that show this, the 250 tribe leaders that supported Korah being consumed by fire, Aaron's disobedient sons offering 'strange incense' to God & being consumed by fire, Mt. Sinai appearing to be being consumed with fire when Moses was in it, the pillar of fire that led them at night---such imagery would make them see God as powerful, holy, righteous, and awe-inspiring!
- - - A Jealous God: A 'healthy jealousy,' similar to how a man does not want his wife to sleep with other men, God does not want His children/followers to follow after other gods! That's not what we were designed for, it ruins our lives!
- - 4:25-31) A Key Verse!
- - - What do you see emphasized here?
- - - - A Warning: Disobey & bad things will happen!
- - - - - Remember this! In 8th grade we see this start to happen!
- - - - A Comfort: V29; In repentance they will be restored

Something to Ponder:
- Deut. 5) What is the heading?
- - Why repeat the Law? Why take this time?
- - - One reason may be that they are quick to forget, they need some reminders!
- - - But also, similar to today's journal…
- - - - The key reason is that this is a new generation!
- - - - This generation needs to personally hear & respond to God’s covenant
- - - - Just like our own relationship with God!
- - - - - My parents were strong Christians & I've been to church ever since I was a baby--but that does not cause me to have a relationship with God!
- - - - - I must personally respond to God's invitation to have a relationship with Himself. We can't get it because our family was.
